Shirley has been a volunteer with OpenSight for over three years now, and her presence continues to make a lasting impact on everyone she meets. She is always a joy to be around, creating a warm and welcoming environment.
A retired Psychotherapist, Shirley is particularly passionate about supporting others to manage feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. She generously shares practical tips and techniques, drawing on both her professional background and personal insight. Her commitments to helping others is clear, and it is something that truly lights her up.
Shirley says; “I just am really passionate about helping people through that fear and loss that sight loss can bring. Being sight impaired myself, I know it takes a lot of courage to get to grips with the challenges, and I feel really privileged to help people with that.”
Her support has been especially valuable during our Insights course, a two-day workshop designed to bring people together for in-person connection, shared lived experience, and practical guidance on living with sight loss.
In addition, Shirley has contributed to our bus confidence workshops, delivering confidence-building sessions that are consistently well received. Participants often leave feeling more empowered, taking away techniques they can use in their daily lives, and even passing them on to others.
We are incredibly grateful for everything Shirley brings to OpenSight. Her kindness, expertise, and genuine care make a real difference.
