Diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision impairment and blindness in the UK, primarily due to complications like diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema. These conditions result from prolonged high blood sugar levels damaging the blood vessels in the retina, often progressing without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs.
Recognising the critical intersection between diabetes and eye health, OpenSight is committed to supporting individuals affected by both conditions. Our services include:
- Low vision clinics: providing assessments and advice on visual aids.
- Social groups: offering peer support and shared experiences.
- Assistive technology support: helping individuals explore and use devices and software to maintain independence and manage daily life with sight loss.
We are pleased to announce our participation in the ‘United Through Diabetes 2025’ programme, organised by the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF). This annual initiative comprises a series of events aimed at informing, inspiring, and empowering individuals living with diabetes. Notably, the programme includes a ‘Diabetes and Looking After Your Eyes’ [Diabetes Wellness Morning South 2025 – Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation] information morning on Saturday the 14th of June, at the Solent Hotel in Whiteley, Hampshire.
At this event, OpenSight will be on hand to provide resources, answer questions, and discuss how we can support those dealing with diabetes-related sight loss. We believe that through education and support, individuals can better manage their health and maintain their quality of life.
