Are you blind or partially sighted?
-
Do you live in Hampshire?
-
Do you have a desire to improve accessibility for blind and partially sighted people?
The Hampshire Sight Loss Council (SLC) is approaching its 1st anniversary and we’re now seeking some new volunteers to join them.
As a volunteer, you will support us with making goods and services more accessible for fellow blind and partially sighted (BPS) people. Some of the work that we’re doing currently includes:
- Working with local bus operators on implementing our bus driver awareness resource
- Promoting our #CutItBack campaign with councils and residents
- Engaging with the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) to improve the experience for BPS visitors
- Supporting the Westquay Shopping Centre in Southampton with staff awareness and making the shopping centre more accessible to BPS shoppers
The Hampshire SLC meets every 8 weeks, alternating between hybrid meetings and in-person meetings, currently in Winchester. We complete our project work around these meetings on an as needed basis. Project work could include engaging in online meetings, creating resources, delivering vision impairment awareness sessions, completing access assessments, etc. Training/guidance is always provided and all travel expenses are reimbursed.
Kate Healey, a Hampshire SLC Volunteer said:
“My former boss suggested I join Hampshire Sight Loss Council as she believed I had the right skills to help contribute towards making positive changes for people living in Hampshire who have sight loss.
I’m glad I acted on the recommendation because, since doing so, I’ve been able to help increase people’s awareness of the challenges that living with sight loss bring on a day-to-day basis and working on projects with like-minded people really does make a difference. I like the fact that projects can vary from anything transport related to retail, health and environment and I can use my expertise in different ways.”
