Improving Cancer Care for People with Sensory Impairments Across Wessex

OpenSight is proud to be partnering with Help & Care and Wessex Cancer Alliance on an innovative new project focusing on the experience of people with sensory impairments when accessing cancer treatment and support services.

Disabled people—especially those with sight or hearing loss—face well-documented barriers across the healthcare system. Research shows that people with sensory impairments often report poorer communication, reduced access to information, and a lack of support that meets their needs throughout the cancer care pathway.

To address these inequalities, we are recruiting paid Community Researchers. These roles are specifically for people with lived experience of sensory impairment who want to help shape meaningful improvements.

What will Community Researchers do?

Community Researchers will work alongside our project team to:

  • Engage with local people and communities affected by sight or hearing loss
  • Deliver interviews, workshops, and focus groups
  • Help identify barriers in current cancer services
  • Co-create solutions, tools, and recommendations for healthcare teams
  • Contribute to the final report and practical resources for cancer care providers

The role offers £18 per hour, flexible working, and reimbursement of all reasonable travel expenses.

Why this work matters

Half of all people will experience cancer at some point in their lives, yet disabled people continue to face preventable inequalities in diagnosis, treatment, and support. This project aims to ensure that the voices of people with sensory impairments are no longer overlooked, and that services adapt to meet their needs.

Get involved

If you have lived experience of sensory impairment and would like to contribute to this impactful work, we would love to hear from you.

Closing date for applications is Monday 6th April at midnight.
