From Student Project to Team Member

4th June 2025

Hi! I’m Maisie, and I’m proud to introduce myself as OpenSight’s new Fundraising and Communications Officer. My journey with this incredible charity began as part of a university assignment, and has since turned into something so much more meaningful.

As part of my university degree, I was part of a team tasked with organising a fundraising event. I knew I wanted to work with a charity that made a real impact locally, and that’s how I came across OpenSight. With the support of Gemma at OpenSight, I planned a charity walk followed by a bake sale and raffle, and what was meant to be a one-off project quickly turned into a passion. Not only did the event raise vital funds and awareness, but it also gave me a first-hand look at how much dedication, compassion and energy goes into ensuring vision impaired people are empowered to live their lives confidently and how they wish. I was inspired, and I wanted to stay involved. Fast forward a few months, and I’m now officially part of the OpenSight team.

A little more about me: I come from a background in event management and communications. I love working on projects that bring people together, spark conversations, and make a genuine difference. In my new role, I’ll be helping to grow our presence across Hampshire, whether that’s through organising impactful fundraising events, building relationships with supporters and donors, or managing our communications across social media and beyond.

I’m passionate about finding innovative ways to raise both awareness and funds. I want people to feel connected to the work OpenSight does because every conversation, every share, every donation helps us continue supporting blind and partially sighted people across the county. Joining OpenSight feels like coming full circle. I first got involved as a student volunteer, and now I have the chance to play a part in shaping real, positive change.

If you’d like to get involved, support an event, or just have a chat about how we can collaborate, I’d love to hear from you.

Maisie.
