Disabled Persons Bus Pass

The disabled persons bus pass grants someone with a disability free travel when going via bus. Restrictions vary across different counties. In Hampshire, you can use the bus pass between the hours of 9:00am and 11:00pm from Monday to Friday. The pass allows free travel all day on weekends and bank holidays. 

The bus pass allows for free travel at any time in London for busses displaying the roundel. You may also use the bus pass for park and ride services, although you will need to pay for parking. 

If you require a carer, you can get a companion bus pass which allows for free travel for both you and the companion. The same restrictions listed above apply. 

Eligibility

You are eligible for a disabled persons bus pass if you are aged 5 or above and meet any of the following criteria: 

  • Are blind or partially sighted
  • Are severely or profoundly deaf
  • Are without speech 
  • Have a disability or injury that affects your ability to walk
  • Have amputated arms, or have long term loss of the use of both arms
  • Have a severe learning disability 
  • Are a member or veteran of the armed forces who has been severely injured in service 
  • Would be refused a driving licence due to fitness under section 92 of the Road Transport Act 1988

To quality for a bus pass, you must provide one of the following: 

  • Award letter for higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance 
  • Award letter for War Pensioners Mobility Supplement 
  • Award letter for guaranteed income payment for tariff levels 1-8 under the 2005 Armed Forces Compensation Scheme 
  • A copy of your letter from DVLA giving notice of long-term refusal or withdrawal of a driving licence
  • If the DVLA letter is not available, provide medical evidence from a qualified healthcare professional which states why you cannot drive 
  • Full award letter for Personal Independence Payment 
  • Certificate of vision impairment 
  • Audiology evidence demonstrating a classification of severe hearing loss, hearing loss or evidence of being registered as British sign language user with HCC services 

The disability must be permanent or have lasted for a minimum of 12 months.
