You can get a grant from your local council if you are disabled and need to make changes to your home in order to make it more accessible, for example:

  • Widen doors and install ramps or grab rails
  • Improve access to rooms and facilities, for example, with a stairlift or level access shower
  • Improve access to your garden
  • Build an extension, for example, a downstairs bedroom
  • Provide a heating system suitable for your needs
  • Adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use

What you will receive

How much you receive will depend on your household income and any savings you have over £6,000. You can apply for a grant up to £30,000 that can be used to make accessible arrangements to your house.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you or someone you live with must meet the following criteria:

  • Be disabled
  •  Intend to live in the property for the grant period (usually 5 years, however this can be lowered in some circumstances, such as if the person is terminally ill)

The person submitting the application must also be the owner, landlord, or tenant and the council needs to be happy that the work is:

  • Necessary and appropriate to meet the disabled persons needs
  • Reasonable and can be done with the age and condition of the property in mind

You will also need to apply for planning permission separately and the council may not give you the grant if you begin work before your application is approved.

How to apply

You can apply for the grant through your local council who will have to give you a decision within 6 months. The government funds an organisation called foundation who can help you apply. Click here for more information.
