Week 7: From Salzburg to the Alps
Week seven was all about shifting gears — from city exploring to family time and finally tackling the Alps head-on.
Friday took Steve, Eva, and ten-year-old Danny into Salzburg for a day of sightseeing. The city’s rich history, beautiful streets and lively atmosphere gave them a welcome pause before the demanding days ahead.
Saturday was set aside for the big climb from Salzburg into Italy. But over breakfast, plans changed. With the weather forecast looking poor and Danny in need of a breather, it felt like the right moment to adjust. Danny travelled to Slovakia to spend time with his grandparents, where he’ll stay for a couple of weeks before rejoining the journey refreshed.
Sunday was family-focused, spent with Eva’s parents. The evening wrapped up with friends gathered around a home-cooked meal — the perfect way for Steve and Eva to relax before the challenges of the Alps.
Monday saw Steve and Eva back in the saddle. They returned early to their campsite, where Alex had kindly looked after their gear, refused to charge them for their stay and even handed them free washing tokens. A simple act of generosity that made a real difference.
Tuesday brought heavy rain, but spirits held strong. Steve and Eva pushed through Salzburg and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly they managed the 56 km through the city.
Wednesday tested resilience. Eva’s knee pain, combined with the rolling hills, meant progress slowed to 35 km. Still, the day was brightened by more sightseeing and the joy of simply being in such a beautiful part of the world.
Thursday began with meeting with fellow cyclists — and a long, cheerful “chin wag” before setting off. Then came the north side of the Alps. The climb was tough, but spirits were high as Steve and Eva powered forward, determined to make it through.
By Friday, the forecast warned of more rain. Rather than risk it, Steve and Eva made the call to pause — resting up and preparing for the next push.
Quote of the Week:
“Nothing extraordinary happens within your comfort zone.”
Steve and Eva agreed: the last three days were tougher than they’d have liked in terms of physical effort, but also the most beautiful, scenic days so far.
Week 8: Across the Alps and Into Italy
Week eight was all about pushing limits — the Alps tested every ounce of stamina, but the reward was unforgettable.
Saturday began with their biggest climb yet, leaving Bad Hofgastein and clocking 55 km despite the punishing gradients. On the descent, disaster struck: Steve’s pedals broke. Thankfully, a bike shop wasn’t far off, and repairs kept them rolling.
By Tuesday, Steve and Eva had crossed the southern side of the Alps and into Italy. That night, they camped for free and met Allan and Brit; fellow cyclists from New Zealand who donated and began following their journey. Riding along a converted railway line, the day started on an easy, scenic track. Their target was 125 km, but heavy rain limited them to 60 km. With no accommodation available, they pushed on into the night, finally reaching a campsite at midnight. Total distance: and amazing 107 km – their longest day yet.
Wednesday morning came with another setback: waking up in what felt like a swamp, thanks to relentless overnight rain. Drained and soaked, they made the smart call to regroup in a hostel.
By Thursday, spirits had lifted. They reached Grado, celebrated with a swim, and treated themselves to good food and drinks. In just four days, they had cycled a staggering 470 km. Their personal best for weekly distance.
As Steve put it, “Croatia, here we come.”
Quote of the Week (Week 8):
“Everything’s impossible until it’s done.”
That’s exactly how Steve and Eva felt when they finally reached the Italian coast — a moment that once seemed impossible, now achieved through grit, persistence, and belief.
