At OpenSight, we are proud to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of our volunteers — and few have given more of their time, compassion, and energy than Michael Inkpen.
Michael, aged 93, has been a dedicated volunteer club leader with OpenSight for over 20 years. Until his recent retirement in August, he ran our Fareham social club with unwavering commitment, supporting over 20 blind and visually impaired members each month. From organising trips and activities to recruiting volunteers and arranging transport, Michael played a central role in creating a welcoming, vibrant space for people living with sight loss.
His dedication didn’t stop there. When the Stubbington club faced closure due to a team stepping down, Michael once again stepped up — leading the group for five years, rebuilding the volunteer team, and leaving the club in a strong, sustainable position before handing it over.
Michael’s journey with OpenSight began when his wife was diagnosed with a visual impairment. Even after her passing, he continued to support others, driven by a deep sense of community and care.
In recognition of his remarkable service, Michael was named Volunteer of the Year at the Hampshire Changemakers Awards 2025 — a well-deserved honour that celebrates the deep and lasting impact of his continued dedication.

Volunteers like Michael are the heartbeat of our charity – we simply couldn’t do what we do without them.”
Michael is, quite simply, a star that shines bright. His legacy is one of kindness, service, and inspiration.
