Empowering Independence: OpenSight’s Active Age groups for People Who Are Blind or Vision Impaired
For adults who are blind or vision impaired, the journey can be emotionally overwhelming. Unlike children or older adults, individuals of working age often feel a deep sense of anger, confusion, and grief over the loss of their independence and the life they once knew. With limited guidance specifically tailored to this age group, younger members of the blind and partially sighted community often struggle to find the support they need.
At OpenSight, our Active Age groups offer a lifeline—a place where people can come together, share experiences, and find the encouragement they need to thrive.
A Gateway to Support and Opportunity
Our Active Age groups are designed to serve as a gateway to new opportunities. The clients who attend range in age from their 20s to their 60s, with both those recently diagnosed and individuals living with long-standing conditions. These groups often become a crucial first step to connect with peers, exchange ideas, and find much-needed support in navigating life with a vision impairment.
Jo Fielder, Independent Living Advisor (Active Age) a key figure in coordinating these groups, shares her perspective on their importance:
The Active Age groups provide a space for people to come together, rebuild their confidence, and realise that being blind or partially sighted doesn’t define their future. It’s about helping them rediscover independence and find new ways to live fulfilling lives.
More Than Just Social Events
While regular social gatherings are a core part of the group, the focus extends far beyond just meeting up.. These groups meet monthly in various locations and provide a supportive environment where blind and partially sighted individuals can socialise, make friends, and share valuable information relevant to their age group.
The groups offer a range of activities, including:
- Tech demonstrations showcasing the latest in assistive technology
- Information about services and resources for visually impaired individuals
- Days out to the cinema, bowling, lunches, and visits to cultural attractions
A Growing Community of Support
Since the launch of our first group in 2016, these Active Age Groups have become a vital source of support, with attendance ranging from 6 to 20 participants at each session. Each group is run by a staff member, with support from visually impaired volunteers who bring their own lived experiences to the table.
For many, these groups are more than just a monthly meeting—they’re a place to reconnect with life, regain confidence, and explore new opportunities.
